Or, any South Africans, we have Mandela to inspire.

And the leader that came to mind was Nelson Mandela.

(Laughter)

Free is a great word. You can serve it almost any way.

But he started the country on a path of a positive cycle.

I asked them to name me just 20.

In that moment in time,

Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Angola.

So I went and saw Amr Moussa at the League of Arab States.

In 1994, after three months of covering the South African election,

It's about those children who took to the streets fighting, screaming, Free Nelson Mandela!

And just to think of one or two people out of Africa who are just really inspiring.

Could we really be the great generation that Mandela asked us to be?

I was sitting next to Nelson Mandela I was very privileged to do so when Amy Winehouse came onto the stage.

I was at a concert that he was attending to mark his birthday and for the creation of new resources for his foundation.

We are surrounded by the most amazing people who do things that seem to be absolutely impossible.

And the paradox is that the decade before the last decade was so promising and for one reason primarily.

And I see that we, ordinary people, can do what Aung San Suu Kyi and Ghandi and Mandela did.

And yet the turmoil of recent weeks reminds us that the path to democracy does not end with the casting of a ballot.

And only very rarely in very few cases does it work to use more violence.

The next day, all the artists were invited to join Mandela in Robben Island, where he was going to give a conference to the world's press, standing in front of his former prison cell.

Well, the transition to democracy in South Africa in 1994 was literally a dream come true for many of us.

But do they all know about what has been taking place in South Africa, his country, the country that had one of the highest incidents of transmission of the virus?

We just recently opened a learning laboratory in a school in the West Cape in South Africa, in a school that's called Nelson Mandela School, and when you see the faces and activities of these children being able to access computers, it's just phenomenal.

The common link between all the work we've had to do is one thing, and that's poverty.

To perform with the intent to inspire people as I had been inspired in that moment.

At the same time in South Africa, after Nelson Mandela had been released from prison, the black population commenced the final phase of liberation from apartheid.

You know, we were just in South Africa, and you can't go to South Africa without thinking of Mandela in jail for 27 years.

And Nelson Mandela was quite surprised at the appearance of the singer and I was explaining to him at the time who she was.

I was invited to take part in the launch of Nelson Mandela's 46664 Foundation that is his HlV AlDS foundation.

I left South Africa, and 15 years later, after thinking I would never go back,

By doing so, you will join us and countless others in what I truly believe is the greatest adventure ever taken, the ever demanding journey of equality.

And she said, I want to write a case, Euvin a case on a public sector leader that has lessons for the corporate world.

And this island happened to be the infamous Robben Island, where many, many, many political prisoners who fought against apartheid were held wrongfully for some 20 years, give or take, one of those prisoners having been President Nelson Mandela.

And our guide, he slowly turned to us and asked if any of us would like to open the prison cell where President Mandela was held for 18 years of his life with the master key of the prison.

We could make a very long list, but obviously Nelson Mandela, emerging from 17 years of hard physical labor, 23 years of imprisonment, with this amazing ability to forgive, so that he could lead his nation out the evil regime of apartheid without a bloodbath.
