Many of the talks yesterday talked about improving the quality of life, and reducing poverty, and essentially increasing life expectancy all around the globe.

And mutations that damage the TOR gene just like the daf 2 mutations extend lifespan in worms and flies and mice.

Talk about survival advantage!

And these people suffer.

The first one I'm going to talk about is how to get from a relatively modest amount of life extension which I'm going to define as 30 years, applied to people who are already in middle age when you start to a point which can genuinely be called defeating aging.

I'm going to try to increase the life span of every single person in this room by seven and a half minutes.

They will mostly survive long enough to receive improved treatments that will give them a further 30 or maybe 50 years.

So in this case, we're assuming it's a four year lifespan.

They're increasingly thought of as the fifth 'R' reduce, reuse, recycle, repair and redistribute because they stretch the life cycle of a product and thereby reduce waste.

Ultimately the reason the don't live so long is because they have different genes, that would force them to have a different body that ages less well and therefore age is more rapidly.

A FOXO is a protein that we found in these little, round worms to affect lifespan, and here it affects lifespan in people.

Alright, so finally I'm going to spend the rest of the talk, my last seven and a half minutes, on step one namely, how do we actually get to this moderate amount of life extension that will allow us to get to escape velocity?
