And suppose that there are only 300 certified wine experts in the entire world.

And in those examples, it's important that you understand the difference between a population and a sample.

In order to survive Humans have had to organise themselves.

Sampling error clearly depends on the size of the sample so, and, but also the degree of variance in the population.

And so if you don't have the or the , you're stuck with a finite set of strings.

And we always have to deal with this whenever we engage in this process of trying to get a random and representative sample from the population.

We're getting random representative samples from the population to estimate those population parameters.

A bunch of dirt?

So there's a 95 chance that this is true.

If we just know that the probability of success is p and the probability a failure is 1 minus p.

It's also important to know the distinction between parameter and statistic.

I did that once here, and we saw that the mean was about six, right?

Remember from the first lecture, we often don't know the population parameters, that's why we're doing the research.

You do find groups in the animal kingdom you do find cooperative groups but these groups are always either very small or they're all siblings.

lecture two, I'll just start to use examples.

Let's get a random sample.

So the mean for this sample is 5.47, the mean for the population was 5.5.

Ten of the line experts. Now you see we get a very funky looking distribution.

Well, if that's true, a couple other things had to be true as well.

So now, we're experiencing a lot of sampling error because our sample is so small.

Because there's a lot of similar notation for very different concepts.

And many of you were doing what great, if you will, tribal leaders do, which is to find someone who is a member of a tribe, and to find someone else who is another member of a different tribe, and make introductions.
