That's the story of civilization.

We all have a choice.

These are the causes of too much waste.

But he got great terms on it.

Well, that's because they're all young.

It just looks like the first thing we did was work male for female and female for male.

See, moving on had been easier as a HunterGatherer... difficult when villages emerged,

Lawrence Keeley, looking at casualty rates among contemporary hunter gatherers, which is our best source of evidence about this way of life, has shown a rather different conclusion.

And once a virus touches down, sometimes all it takes is one sneeze to spread the infection throughout the community.

Hunting.

And so, they had minimal technology, but they had some technology.

There are no Neanderthal fossils that are older than 40 years old that we've ever found, and the average age of most of these hunter gatherer tribes is 20 to 30.

A thousand years into this period, we abandon our hunting and gathering patterns.

Well, if that's true, a couple other things had to be true as well.

Let me take you on a journey of several powers of 10 from the millennium scale to the year scale to try to persuade you of this.

The aggregates of joy and suffering thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species,

These are all points, and this is going to be a fancy word, but it's a very simple idea.

They live out in the desert, and still practice the hunter gatherer lifestyle.

That's when I began.

What happened?

Now look here. You must be mistaken. Not now.

Here is a graph that he put together showing the percentage of male deaths due to warfare in a number of foraging, or hunting and gathering societies.

They were called foragers, also known as hunter gatherers.

And, indeed, once again we're moving forward to the kind of sexual expression that we probably saw on the grasslands of Africa a million years ago, because this is the kind of sexual expression that we see in hunting and gathering societies today.

I don't quite mean that the golden rule itself is written in our genes, but you can go to a hunter gatherer society that has had no exposure to any of the great religious traditions, no exposure to ethical philosophy, and you'll find, if you spend time with these people, that, basically, they believe that one good turn deserves another, and that bad deeds should be punished.

For two and a half million years, humans ate what we could gather and hunt.

But at the same time anthropologists know that most hunter gatherer tribes of the world, with that very little technology, actually did not spend a very long time gathering the food that they needed three to six hours a day.

I don't reckon it's for hunting buck.

Now how did we do this?

You can buy a lot of affidavits for 3 million.

And it should take into account what we know of the aesthetic interests of isolated hunter gatherer bands that survived into the 19th and the 20th centuries.
