I think we've all heard of the word, bacteria.

But the one that's probably the most important to you is virulence.

And so we started to think if this really is about communication in bacteria, and it's about counting your neighbors, it's not enough to be able to only talk within your species.

Now, I can think of some possible experiments.

So, it looks like Chile dodged two bullets.

We have a fancy name for this we call it quorum sensing.

Once you find that one out of a billion, you infect it into a bacteria, and make millions and billions of copies of that particular sequence.

If it didn't produce a lot of this toxin, then you might find a smaller number.

They digest our food, they make our vitamins, they actually educate your immune system to keep bad microbes out.

Excuse me?

And in fact, the smallest unit of matter that can evolve independently is, in fact, a single cell a bacteria.

So we went back to molecular biology and started studying different bacteria, and what we've found now is that in fact, bacteria are multilingual.

It's truly stunning that these organisms can do that, and we probably have thousands, if not tens of thousands, of different species on this planet that are capable of doing that.

For example, from the third organism we sequenced,
