So while we want to make economic profit for ourselves and our customers, we are willing to do it with a long term view, and we like to have a wider definition of profits than just the economic profit in the next quarter.

Yep, that's right.

One blueprint for trouble, making collapse likely, is where there is a conflict of interest between the short term interest of the decision making elites and the long term interest of the society as a whole, especially if the elites are able to insulate themselves from the consequences of their actions.

So EBlT, I kind of view that it goes backwards.

They buy more of your service and they tell more of their friends, which leads to more profit.

Because during conflict economic policy typically deteriorates.

But it might be to explicitly control the yield curve further out, so that the borrowing cost for longer debt goes down, so that the yield curve looks something like that.

In fact, if you've got good enough governance, there is no resource boom.

With trade, there's mutual interdependency and mutual gain between parties.

And when people talk about earnings of a company, this is what they're talking about.

War does have its benefits...

So cash could be an asset.

And I would say that national interest and, if you like, what is the global interest to tackle poverty and climate change do, in the long run, come together.

So those three actors.

We have this principal that we don't touch that produces returns, social, economic and ecological.

And at least it'll give you a sense of how revenues, gross profit, operating profit, pre tax income and net income really are different.

Well, there are some technologies which obviously combine both.

The management tended to be too concerned about short term improvement of the bottom line to have any long term design for the future.

This is really important to pay attention to, because so many people say, oh, a company made this much.

So you've probably heard not only the term earnings, you've probably also heard the term earnings per share.

We know how much it takes to build our product.

We don't know.

And anyone doing that is helping to reduce the volatility in the stock.

They have to give permission to let the stock be borrowed, and they benefit, because they get some cut, hopefully, they get some cut of the rent, or the interest that I'm paying.

If they have to pay for it, they use it.

The pie's getting bigger because these are real investments that are going to benefit my village.

And then if you subtract your costs from your revenue, or if you just add these two numbers, because this one is negative, you have your gross profit.

But what do you do when the two come into conflict and you're forced to make a decision that either is in Britain's interest, or the interest of Britons, or citizens elsewhere in the world?

Company A made 1 per share. 1 of EPS.

Our profit here, if we just take the number that we have here,

The company's profits soared.

But anyway, here I want to figure out what is my return on asset?

And you'll hear these numbers, gross and operating profit and net profit and pretax profit, and it's very hard to understand that these are actually very, very different things, because they all have the word profit, and what does gross and operating and all that mean?

So there's all sorts of things you can do.

They allotted the profits fairly.

When incentives don't work, when CEOs ignore the long term health of their companies in pursuit of short term gains that will lead to massive bonuses, the response is always the same.

We lie to protect ourselves or for our own gain or for somebody else's gain.

And I think that the companies, organizations that are flourishing, whether they're profit, for profit, or somewhere in between, are animated by this purpose.

No one wants it to go off.
