How do you monetize that?

I'm going to just end with a positive, nice little story.

Let me write that.

Now ours is just one story.

Tell us about what Benetech does.

So explicitly for the purpose of this class, I'm eliminating nonprofits.

That can be generic manufacturers.

So in February of 2009,

OK, because I'm going to do it very quick.

The University of the People is the first ever non profit, tuition free online University.

I'm running a business here, right?

At this moment, I knew the girls needed a way to connect with their fathers.

These kids are real pros. There were just 7,000 machines out there being tested by kids.

But in general if you take EBlT and you take out the non operating income, you get back to operating profits.

I'm talking about all companies.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

So, One Laptop Per Child was formed about a year and a half ago.

We have wonderful design tools, and more and more are added up here.

So in the for profit sector, the more value you produce, the more money you can make.

That's an important fact, because it tells us that in 40 years, the nonprofit sector has not been able to wrestle any market share away from the for profit sector.

They had an audacious idea.

So Wikipedia's owned by the Wikimedia Foundation, which I founded, a nonprofit organization.

Everybody advised me not to be a nonprofit, but they were all wrong.

And so if we really want, like Buckminster Fuller said, a world that works for everyone, with no one and nothing left out, then the nonprofit sector has to be a serious part of the conversation.

Being a nonprofit is absolutely fundamental.

Darwin's 200th birthday, the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species, the 50th anniversary of SETI as a science, the 25th anniversary of the incorporation of the SETI Institute as a non profit, and of course, the 25th anniversary of TED.

It's an apartheid, and it discriminates against the nonprofit sector in five different areas, the first being compensation.

The last area is profit itself.

So that's a nice thing to keep in the back of your mind, this return on asset concept, and it's very closely tied to operating profits and the actual assets of a firm.
