We're only trying to improve our lives.

It brings to mind a headline I saw recently,

And politically, it was awful.

I think I'm in a difficult position here.

And that is not a bad thing, in itself.

But another really important difference is how they get their greater equality.

It's the same with institutions.

It's not geography.

And the fact is that our healthcare system today is characterized by unconscionable disparities disparities in health on the basis of race and ethnicity, geography, orientation and socioeconomic status.

And I believe if we do these things, we can close the opportunity gaps, we can close the hope gaps.

But there are huge differences at the same time between the better off countries and the worse off countries and there are also huge inequalities within countries.

And there's a lot to be overwhelmed about, to be fair an environmental crisis, wealth disparity in this country unlike we've seen since 1928, and globally, a totally immoral and ongoing wealth disparity.

It comes from the World Values Survey.

So you think about nicking it but then you'll be liable to get arrested 'cause stealing is against the law.

Aaron was willing to put himself at risk for the causes that he believed in.

True wealth does not consist of what we have, but in what we are.

One, the red line, is the ratio of British to Indian per capita income.

And you can see here that there's an exponential Great Divergence.

And this enables the development of a democratic society which everyone benefits from, rich and poor alike.

That's a lot of money.

Let's eliminate disparities so we all feel thankful for everyday

At that time there was a we and them.

U.K., Portugal, USA, Singapore the differences are twice as big.

This is my big vision.

No, what happened to us, Chris, is that power, it's priced off the margin.

This is a typical view of a favela in Rio.

And as soon as you've got that idea, you should immediately wonder what happens if we widen the differences, or compress them, make the income differences bigger or smaller?

Economic historians call this The Great Divergence.

Don't go asking for a Frappuccino there.

And there, you see it in relation to the measure of inequality I've just shown you, which I shall use over and over again in the data.

The goal of education is not wealth or status, but personal development.

So we conclude that it doesn't much matter how you get your greater equality, as long as you get there somehow.

And the blue line is the ratio of American to Chinese.

like the Mughals and the Ottomans.

Curiosity and imagination.

And so chapter one really begins today, with all of us, because within each of us is the power to equal those opportunity gaps and to close the hope gaps.

And here, Maharashtra, with Mumbai, is forging forward.

Look at all the arguments we have these days over health care, over bonuses and bailouts on Wall Street, over the gap between rich and poor, over affirmative action and same sex marriage.

Japan is rather different though.

No man is an island.

Now, why is that happening to us? Why is the inequality rising?
