And that is We are losing our tolerance for vulnerability.

So that's the world we're living in today.

By changing our environment, we put new pressures on our bodies to evolve.

It will dry up inside.

I'm simply saying, this is who we are right now.

In practice one again, the answer to this is someone in one particular standards committee essentially enumerated every possible letter, every possible script sequence , in all of human natural languages or at least all of the ones that we have thus far encountered or codified and we've written down which of those correspond to word letters and which of them correspond to number.

What do these people have in common?

One of the ways in which they are fundamentally different is that we have much richer, broader culture.

And how can we do that?

As essential as it is across our traditions, as real as so many of us know it to be in particular lives, the word compassion is hollowed out in our culture, and it is suspect in my field of journalism.

In fact, I made a living by walking.

And now, we are at a crossroads.

Science needs to be released from the lab into the culture.

We've ordered Chinese food.

And I believe the answer is scarcity.

Another reason although I think, perhaps, the most powerful reason why we find it hard to slow down is the cultural taboo that we've erected against slowing down.

The telling of stories, music, dance, poetry found in all cultures, and many of the motifs and themes that give us pleasure in the arts can be found in all human societies a preference for symmetrical forms, the use of repetition and variation, even things as specific as the fact that in poetry all over the world, you have lines that are very close to three seconds long, separated by pauses.

And I want to make it part of our culture that there is a community of people who are watching out for the worst nightmares of humanity, and that it's accessible to everyone.

It's a lucky number in Chinese culture.

So the contributions of culture if culture changes us, as indeed it does, it changes us by changing our brains.

I want to get a fix on local culture.

It might help us recognize that the way we limit our conversation about death to something that's medical or biological is reflective of a larger culture that we all share of avoiding death, being afraid of talking about it.
